The Generali Insurances in Santa Lucia Department of Naples

Fabio Mangone

Abstract

The complex urban and real estate development of the rione Santa Lucia starts with the approval of the Lops Project in 1886 and the following building permit. The project consists of the construction of a new luxurious residential district on a land reclamation. The new neighborhood views the bay of Naples from a prestigious site, in continuity with the most monumental part of the historic city on one hand, and in dialogue with the new hotels of the waterfront on the other hand.
Particularly interesting is the complex twist of the parties involved in the project: relevant architects, such as Giulio Ulisse Arata, Gino Coppedè and Giovan Battista Comenicini; national highly qualified construction companies, such as the Ligure; leading investors, such as Ferrovie dello Stato, the Italian national railway. Under these particular circumstances, Generali Insurances are solicited to take part in the development in two subsequent steps: before the war, with the purchase of a wide noble apartment building, then resold in a property speculation; during the Twenties, with the construction of a new building in reinforced concrete, alienated right after the completion.
