Residential Complex ΑΟΟΑ of Papagou
Historical, political or economic context in which the plan/project is proposed
The Independent Building Organization of Officers (AOOA) of Greece was founded in 1950 to establish a general housing program for officers and implemented a large number of residences. The Military technical services created new settlements away from the urban centers, within the natural environment, where there was ample space to develop the characteristics of a new bourgeoisie. The settlements created by AOOA are near three major cities of Greece: near Athens, (Papagou and Dioni Pikermi), Thessaloniki (Kalamaria) and Alexandroupolis. Of all the settlements carried out by the AOOA the Papagou settlement is the main one. There are comparable characteristics between the housing programs of the Greek army and those of the US Department of Defense during the Cold War.
