Marichela Sepe is an Associate Professor at the Department of Civil, Building and Environmental Engineering (DICEA), Sapienza University of Rome, and a member of the Doctoral Board of the PhD Programme in Architecture and Urban Engineering. She has also collaborated with the ISMed–CNR and the DiARC – University of Naples Federico II.
She has been a Visiting Professor: in 2013 at Peking University, where she also delivered lectures at the universities of Beijing, Wuhan, and Xi’an; and in 2024 at the Faculty of Architecture of Gdańsk University of Technology. Her research interests include sustainable urban design; place identity; healthy cities; liveable public spaces; creative urban regeneration; post-earthquake reconstruction and multi-adaptation; cultural heritage enhancement; and multimedia. On these topics, she has published numerous articles in national and international journals, conference proceedings, books, and book chapters. At both national and international levels, she serves as scientific coordinator and member of conference scientific committees, as a referee, and as a member of the editorial boards of leading scientific journals in urban design and planning.
She has acted as coordinator and scientific leader in several national and international research projects, including: FP7-PEOPLE-2011-IRSES MC-IRSES – PUMAH; European Culture Programme 2007–2013 Preserving Places; POR-CReO/FESR 2007–2013 TECON@BC; POR FESR Lazio 2007–2013 Div@ter; and the SISMI Project of the DTC District of the Lazio Region; LOVE Sapienza, NARRATES and TASTE funded by Sapienza Università di Roma. She has also been a member of the Advisory Steering Group (ASG) of the HORIZON 2020 Urban Maestro project and Co-Leader of Work Package 3 on urban regeneration within the HORIZON 2020 LANDSUPPORT project. She is currently Head of the Urban Impact Unit of the PRIN 2020 SUMMA project, Coordinator of the GUDesign Network, and a member of the COST Actions Dynamics of Placemaking and Writing Urban Places. She is Head of the Scientific Laboratory “Geodesign and Urban Design” at the LUPT – University of Naples Federico II. Sepe is Vice President of the Campania Section of the Italian National Institute of Urban Planning (INU) and a member of the National Executive Board of INU, as well as of the Executive Board of EURA and ASSOBiSP and member of the Urban Design Group.
Between 2014 and 2023, she received several awards, including the Ardito–Desio Award for papers presented at the IPSAPA conferences in 2014, 2016, and 2018; the Urban Planning Literature Award of the Italian National Institute of Urban Planning (INU) in 2014, 2015, and 2017; and the Horizon Europe Award in 2023. She has also participated in several Architecture and Urban Design competitions, achieving two first prizes and one selection.
