Abstract

The preservation of the historic city, its conservation and modification, were the hypotheses of a long and heterogeneous collective project of European origin that has conveyed an idea of the city to the world. The design of the existing city is one of the most relevant and original Italian intellectual contributions to international research in the field of architecture and the city of the twentieth century. The experiences started in the Italian cities became a model that between the 60's and 80’s spread across Europe and the world and was adopted by international institutions.
