Abstract

Urban planning is art and science at the same time. Its practical and theoretical foundations have always been collected, articulated and systematised. The great urban expansions of the 19th century forced the establishment of modern urban planning as an independent discipline. This was accompanied by an intensive production of handbooks, the golden age of which lasted until the reconstruction after the Second World War. This book presents a critical history of urban planning manuals. It reveals hitherto unnoticed contexts and at the same time makes lost knowledge of the city fruitful for contemporary discourse and practice.
