Abstract

The thematic node addresses the issue of the people/environment relationship and its importance for urban design studies. It aims at discussing, with an interdisciplinary perspective, theoretical and methodological aspects for studying people’s experience in place. This approach emphasizes the interaction between physical and intangible components of urban places, with a particular - but not exclusive - focus on the approaches that relate architecture and environmental and social psychology. Theoretical issues include psychological constructs such as place attachment or sense of community. Methods include analog and digital solutions that enable to both simulate the environment and describe, and potentially measure, people’s experience in time and space in a human-centered design perspective.
