Abstract

This book builds on the encounter between university research and the activities of the Department for Social and Housing Policies of the Municipality of Milan. Two joint workshops addressed new ways of using the vacant municipal housing stock at Chiesa Rossa district, selected as a "pilot case". The authors extended their critical reflections adopting an interdisciplinary key for an understanding of the broader Milanese context. The main problems under examination concern the redefinition of social housing (particularly for young people) and the identification of public intervention strategies. These latter, when contextualized in the current Milanese scenario, concern the typological complexity and urban role of social housing, giving due consideration to the originality of the physical and social body of Milan.
